Falling in love with a Tetris cake

According to the source, this is a wedding cake, though a closer look at the 2 figures gives that one away. It’s probably not worth analysing this one too much as a marriage based on Tetris blocks could amount to some rough times. Let’s just assume they are both retro-gaming fans and end the speculation right there.

I would be all for this for many reasons. First it’s a Tetris cake. Second it’s colourful and a break from your standard big white cake. Third there’s no cutting involved, so table-to-mouth time dramatically reduced. Fourth, no family feuds due to Uncle Benny having more than you. Fifth, it’s a Tetris cake! OK OK, so only 1 and 5 are important here.

If the mix of cola and that coloured icing doesn’t liven the kids up at the wedding disco, I don’t know what will.

The Grilltendo: Now You’re Grilling with Power!

With a bank holiday upon us it’s traditional to dust off the old barbie and cook for our friends. But what if some of those friends are vegeterians, they still need feeding but they might not be so keen on their veggie burgers being cooked on the same BBQ as your rump steak!  Greg Matta was faced with the same problem and to differentiate between the two BBQ’s he came up with this snazzy paint scheme for his veggie one.

Please take note that when I have a BBQ at my place I always offer a vegetarian choice: they have the choice to sit there and watch us tucking into delicious meat or they can go home and cry into their tofu stew!

Of course I’m jesting and plan on doing a little BBQ painting myself this weekend! BBQ’ed mushrooms anyone?

House of Cards Table

The clever House of Cards table by Brazilian designer-architect Mauricio Arruda is an inventive furniture piece that succeeds at being stylish and innovative simultaneously.
house-of-cards-table.png

It looks like it’s ready to collapse from little more than a napkin’s weight, but the House Of Cards table is actually able to support up to 550lbs. That’s because those 13:1 scale oversized playing cards are actually made from laser cut 4mm steel plates that are all individually printed to resemble real playing cards. And like with a real house of cards the plates are randomly drawn from a large pile so that each table is composed of a unique set of cards. But instead of relying on gravity and holding your breath to keep it standing, these cards are welded together.

NES Advantage Lamp

The 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System never seems to leave us. It’s there in all we dream and think about. From childhood images to the whole new Advantage Lamp that brings about everything from the buttons to the style back to life.

While I’d rather be using this Advantage controller to take down the 8 Robot Masters, I also support the repurposing of such retro devices, which would otherwise be just gathering dust in an attic somewhere.

This one in particular was a one-off, and has been sold, but it looks like you’ll be able to nab later projects by following @RecycledRetro on Twitter

Super Mario Bros in the bathroom

Not like that.

There’s nothing wrong with letting a bit of your retro-nerd tendencies seep out now and again. (Though you should always know your limits).

super_mario_bathroom_1.jpg

eisley over at Destructoid, and her boyfriend, decided to turn their guest bathroom into a 2D Mario haven. Sounds like they’ve put in a lot of hours, and according to the blurb, there’s still more detail to go… before moving on to another room!

“This is just the first part, though, we’re starting the next level, in the second room of this bathroom, next weekend. And after that we have plans for shelves, custom light switches, fixing up a themed shower curtain, certain Marionoises somehow happening, Club Nintendo towels, and so on. The ideas never really seem to stop flowing. And yet, as we were finishing this first level yesterday my boyfriend mentioned doing yet another themed room.”

Sounds like a lot of work, but looks like a great job!

Sit On Your Enemy

When is a chair not just a chair?

When it looks like one of the enemy ships from the Space Invaders game.

The folks at Dorothy have come up with this prototype foam chair based on the original Space Invaders arcade game, sure to make all the time we spend pretending to save the world a little more comfy. Here’s hoping they take the next step into production.

Goldfish – We Come Together

This is a little out of the ordinary for a blog post, but this track from Goldfish is jammed with retro games scattered with chiptune. Great tune with lots of bass… well ‘All Your Bass’ in fact! Anyway, a great track with an amazing video. Check it. Now. Or I’ll call the Jazz Police.

I’m sure there will be more, but I managed to spot Elevator Action, Pitfall, QBert, Excitebike, Bubble Bobble, Streetfighter 2, Pacman, Donkey Kong, Duckhunt, Bomberman, Sonic plus a sly Ninja Turtle.

There were also a couple of nods to newer games, such as Lego Star Wars, Katamari and Angry Birds. Oh, and The Orange Box

Henge concrete table tennis platform

concrete_table_tennis_1.jpg

Answering your first question, these tables conform to the International Table Tennis Federation specification for bounce. So, what more did you want to know?

Well, this is a table tennis table designed by New York company, HENGE. The table is reinforced concrete, which is then polished and sealed. The net is a powder-coated steel, or available as uncoloured stainless for a little more.

Say goodbye to your rotten outdoor table!

HENGE recently donated this table to NYC for everyone to use.

Pouf-Man Luxury Leather Seating

Let’s get one thing straight here, the guys who designed this furniture clearly had no inspiration from any 1980s dot-munching arcade game. Nor does the name “Pouf-Man” have any similarity to the name “PAC-MAN”. Nope, there’s nothing even remotely reminiscent of PAC-MAN going on in QAYOT’s Pouf-Man designer seating collection.

pouf-man.png

It’s just a strange coincidence that it has a similar name, that’s all. I mean really, PAC-MAN gobbled power pills and munched on ROUND dots. Nowhere in the original game do I remember any power squares or chewy cubes, do you? And PAC-MAN was yellow, not black, white, brown or red!

So as long as you’re not with the Namco legal division, head on over to the QAYOT website and check out the entire collection.

Modern 8-bit Movie Game Posters

This is a really cool spin on movie poster art by Penney Design. It’s kind of cool to see how these movie concepts are just reduced to a few simple pixels on an Atari old video game box, complete with the scribbles and ludicrous price tags retro gamers frequently encounter in used game stores.

Other titles include such classics as, Snakes On A Plane, Prison Break and my favourite, Inception.
