iCade 8-Bitty Retro NES controller

We featured the iCade gaming cabinet for your iPad back in May last year, we loved it and now ThinkGeek have revealed the 8-Bitty controller which can be used for an iPad or iPhone and I love this even more.

It’s a much simpler task to identify the differences between the 8-Bitty and a NES controller than it is to list their similarities. There are two shoulder buttons and an additional two face buttons (for a total of four) not present on the NES controller – necessary additions given the sophistication of contemporary games. And the controller is more colorful than Nintendo’s gray, red and black original, with a front face of primary colors, and edged in a wood-styled veneer.

However, a closer inspection of the product photography betrays the incredible attention to detail and respect shown to the original NES control pad. The 8-Bitty recreates its inspiration down to an insane level of detail. There are the small, rounded oblong rubber buttons recessed into the face in the precise location of the NES controller’s start and select buttons. There are the chubby arrows on each of the D-pad’s four directional buttons. There’s even the tiny cuboid of missing plastic on the controller’s upper edge in line with the cable of the original controller. Hopefully the 8-Bitty will feel as authentic as it looks. Correctly weighted buttons and pad are a must.

No release date has yet been announced but ThinkGeek do have it listed on their site for $24.99 and if you’re interested they will email you once it’s available.

EyeAsteroids – Asteroids controlled by the eye

I was browsing through The Sunday Times tech supplement yesterday and came across this eye-controlled asteroids arcade cabinet by a company called Tobii.

EyeAsteroids

The potential in this kind of technology is amazing and obviously extends way further than gaming. I saw something similar at the Eurogamer Expo last year at Earls Court running Trackmania Nations.

EyeAsteroids

“Using your eyes as a game controller is an almost magical experience. It’s as if the game can read your mind, creating the sensation of having supernatural powers.

Using your eyes to direct attention is fundamental in human interaction. Using your eyes to interact with games, on the other hand, is completely new. With gaze interaction, the game understands your gaze the same way people around you do, taking immersion and game intensity to a new level.”

Worlds smallest Space Invaders arcade machine

It’s great to see people making their own arcade machines, after all that’s how we started at surface tension many years ago! So we loved Youtube user Vcoleiro’s cracking mini Space Invaders machine. He’s actually packed a Game Boy Arcade into the cab, so you need not play just Space Invaders on the setup — it will accept any GBA cartridges.smallest-si.png
A great way to recycle your old GBA SP, this 7 inch by 3.5 inch by 4.5 inch cabinet is made of 6mm medium-density fiberboard and has the A, B, right bumper, left bumper,  start, and select buttons with a small joystick on the the deck.

I personally find this thing to be as awesome as the full sized arcade, and I can’t wait to try it out if I ever get the chance!

Take a look at master miniature craftsmen Vcoleiro1′s YouTube video of his amazing build.

Huge joysticks with the new Tetris Giant!

Not new to the world apparently, but new to me, so I thought it was worth a mention.

So anyway, Tetris Giant uses two huge balltop joysticks to control huge blocks on a huge screen. Shown in the images is a projector, which has now been dropped down to a 40-something inch LCD. Probably to bring some of the $10,000 cost down, but also to reduce the footprint

If you’ve got a significantly shorter significant other, Sega have got that covered with the different sized sticks!

Modern 8-bit Movie Game Posters

This is a really cool spin on movie poster art by Penney Design. It’s kind of cool to see how these movie concepts are just reduced to a few simple pixels on an Atari old video game box, complete with the scribbles and ludicrous price tags retro gamers frequently encounter in used game stores.

Other titles include such classics as, Snakes On A Plane, Prison Break and my favourite, Inception.

Turn your iPad into an arcade cabinet

I love this iPad arcade cabinet which will soon be available from ThinkGeek it takes me right back to the good old days of gaming. The iCADE uses Bluetooth to connect to the iPad so there’s nothing else you need to do. You’re ready to “insert coin” and game on!
icade-3.png

There’s a full-sized joystick and eight arcade buttons ready to smash for some on-screen action. iCADE is compatible with 100 Atari classics including Asteroids, Centipede, and of course Donkey Kong and PAC-MAN.

Now for the really bad news….at the moment ThinkGeek can only ship within the US and we can’t find a stockist here in the UK. Anyone planning a holiday to America?

Fold-up USB D-pad

The ION GO PAD is a folding, fully-functional gaming pad with great features for the most demanding gamers. This controller is great for throwing in your purse, briefcase or backpack and makes a great companion to your netbook or laptop computer.

Simply connect GO PAD to your computer’s USB port and you have a two-axis directional-pad, four action buttons, four shoulder buttons and turbo on/off buttons to take full control of your gaming experience. GO PAD is also compatible with both Mac and PC computers, so you can bust out and start gaming anywhere, no matter your system. GO PAD allows all your mobile gaming dreams to unfold. PC users can start blasting away instantly with the included Asteroids game for PC from Atari.

World’s smallest Donkey Kong cabinet

From the Build Your Own Arcade Controls forum comes this amazing miniature piece from forum member, Bender (as in the robot from Futurama!). If you’re looking to build an arcade machine yourself, this is a great place for information with some really helpful forum members. surface tension is also members of the boards.

There’s no stone left unturned with this one. It’s 1/8 scale (8.25″ tall), which apparently equates to 512 times smaller than the full-size cabinet. It is fully functional, using a GP2X Wiz hardware and OLED display. The marquee is also illuminated! The attention to detail is really quite something.
