An ‘Enterprising’ new coffee table for Trekkies

As you are probably aware by now the guys here have an unhealthy obsession with coffee tables and we always get very excited when we stumble across a new design. We love the idea of coming home after a long, hard day at the office, and resting your feet on the Enterprise NCC-1701-C.

This Enterprising coffee table was created by artist Barry Shields, it is made from ash, poplar and cherry wood. It took a month to complete and features a glass top that makes it look like it is in motion, with a base that portrays the ship in orbit over a planet. It will set you back £2,018.75 before shipping—but you can’t put a price on endless jokes about the warp factor of your living room.

Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface

We couldn’t help but swoon over the awesome technology in Microsoft’s Surface multitouch table. The only issue was the physical restrictions put on it by the required internal cameras.

Well, this has all changed now and Samsung are apparently ready to roll out the SUR40, which will replace the existing system. It’s multi-touch is now a proper touchscreen and supports 50 points of contact.

The display will be shipping out at $8,400 ($9,049 with legs). This is for a 40″ full HD screen, sealed against water and resistant to shock. It’s all running on an Athlon X2 245e CPU, with 320GB of storage and Radeon video card.

So, how do we get our hands on one?

The new Dual arcade table – Head-to-head gaming

Some of you may have seen this, or even had a play on it last year at Replay in Blackpool. Well, it’s now officially released!

Based around the 60-in-1 arcade board, this baby is our entry-level system in our arcade table range. It is equally as well designed, built and finished as our other arcade tables but uses a dedicated arcade PCB rather than a PC system. So you just plug it in, turn it on and you’re away. Available in Walnut only.

Take a look at the specs and games list on our website and view more photos.

The new Rubik’s Cube seat from surface tension

We’ve been extremely busy lately. We haven’t eaten, we haven’t slept, and none of our friends have seen us in months!

We’re now pleased to announce the launch of three new products. As with all other surface tension products, they are all produced in the UK.

First up is the Rubik’s Cube seat, which is also a table and a storage unit. Made from MDF, sprayed to a fine black finish and stickered with pantone-matched colours to give a real authentic over-sized feel… measuring 45cm³.
These are currently in manufacture and are available now for pre-order for Christmas delivery in the UK, Eire and Channel Islands only.

A motherboard of a coffee table

This sleek, cool coffee table is a great way to recycle redundant computer parts. It’s made from old motherboards placed on top of a traditional table design with transparent plastic on top.

Created by Chris Harrison, this table would be the talking point in any home and certainly is a innovative use of redundant equipment.

However, this is a one-off design and it’s home in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute over in Pittsburgh, USA.

Domino Coffee Table

Who can say they did not enjoy setting up and toppling dominoes as a child? Captured in a kind of slow-motion sequence, that same sensation is beautifully converted from a toy concept into this clever contemporary coffee table.

While it might look simple, this modernist exercise in “physics and play” takes a single craftsman an impressive six weeks to construct by hand, as each attachment, angle and position must of course be carefully accounted for – not so simple as our childhood playthings after all.

While it is also available with a solid wooden top surface, it would seem silly to put so much craftsmanship into something and not be able to see its most striking feature from every angle – thus the glass top with wood trim seems to serve the design best.

Available by licensing order only from SIDD price on application.

Photo shoot for the forthcoming ‘Dual’

We got a bunch of friends round over the weekend and took a whole load of photos for surface tension‘s forthcoming ‘Dual’ arcade table which will be available in early September. Partying around a coffee table under bright lights is definitely the way to spend a Saturday!

I didn’t get much time to play it myself, but it was hard getting certain people off it! Either that or they loved having their photo taken!

Cubico Table – a storage monster for your living room

Well it’s not actually a storage monster since it can’t really hide away all the junk you have around the living room, but it’s definitely a neat solution that can at least help you arrange some of those books, magazines, remotes, CDs, and everything else you may want to tidy away when your girlfriend comes to visit.

This sculptural coffee table has been created by Alessandro Di Prisco, the Cubico Table has horizontal and vertical mini-shelves that are ready to deal with all that surplus in the living room. The Cubico will look even better especially after you’ve adorned it with plenty of the stuff I mentioned above and which you’re not really using on a regular basis anyway.

House of Cards Table

The clever House of Cards table by Brazilian designer-architect Mauricio Arruda is an inventive furniture piece that succeeds at being stylish and innovative simultaneously.
house-of-cards-table.png

It looks like it’s ready to collapse from little more than a napkin’s weight, but the House Of Cards table is actually able to support up to 550lbs. That’s because those 13:1 scale oversized playing cards are actually made from laser cut 4mm steel plates that are all individually printed to resemble real playing cards. And like with a real house of cards the plates are randomly drawn from a large pile so that each table is composed of a unique set of cards. But instead of relying on gravity and holding your breath to keep it standing, these cards are welded together.
