Help us decide on our Rubik’s Cube Stool!

You may have seen our pre-production Rubik’s Cube stool at R3play last year and it won’t be long before it becomes a reality. But we need some help deciding which should be the ‘missing’ colour.

rubik_stool.JPG

Because it is storage and requires feet, it must have an orientation. So as a result, one colour must be lost :( But, we’re running a poll so you can help decide which colour that is! :)

Due to the design, each colour has a set opposing colour, so whatever colour you choose to get rid of, decides what colour you’ll be sitting on! Every silver lining has a cloud…

White is opposite Yellow, Blue is opposite Green and Red is opposite Orange. Or if you like images…

So, we’d love to hear your input on this one. You could leave us a message here, or better still, head over to our facebook page and just click on the choice of colours. If you’d like to join the page, we’d like that too.

House of Cards Table

The clever House of Cards table by Brazilian designer-architect Mauricio Arruda is an inventive furniture piece that succeeds at being stylish and innovative simultaneously.

It looks like it’s ready to collapse from little more than a napkin’s weight, but the House Of Cards table is actually able to support up to 550lbs. That’s because those 13:1 scale oversized playing cards are actually made from laser cut 4mm steel plates that are all individually printed to resemble real playing cards. And like with a real house of cards the plates are randomly drawn from a large pile so that each table is composed of a unique set of cards. But instead of relying on gravity and holding your breath to keep it standing, these cards are welded together.

NES Advantage Lamp

The 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System never seems to leave us. It’s there in all we dream and think about. From childhood images to the whole new Advantage Lamp that brings about everything from the buttons to the style back to life.

While I’d rather be using this Advantage controller to take down the 8 Robot Masters, I also support the repurposing of such retro devices, which would otherwise be just gathering dust in an attic somewhere.

This one in particular was a one-off, and has been sold, but it looks like you’ll be able to nab later projects by following @RecycledRetro on Twitter

Sit On Your Enemy

When is a chair not just a chair?

When it looks like one of the enemy ships from the Space Invaders game.

The folks at Dorothy have come up with this prototype foam chair based on the original Space Invaders arcade game, sure to make all the time we spend pretending to save the world a little more comfy. Here’s hoping they take the next step into production.

Pouf-Man Luxury Leather Seating

Let’s get one thing straight here, the guys who designed this furniture clearly had no inspiration from any 1980s dot-munching arcade game. Nor does the name “Pouf-Man” have any similarity to the name “PAC-MAN”. Nope, there’s nothing even remotely reminiscent of PAC-MAN going on in QAYOT’s Pouf-Man designer seating collection.

pouf-man.png

It’s just a strange coincidence that it has a similar name, that’s all. I mean really, PAC-MAN gobbled power pills and munched on ROUND dots. Nowhere in the original game do I remember any power squares or chewy cubes, do you? And PAC-MAN was yellow, not black, white, brown or red!

So as long as you’re not with the Namco legal division, head on over to the QAYOT website and check out the entire collection.

Solar Powered Lounge Chair with Charging Station

We may not be known for our hours of sunshine in the UK but when the sun does make an appearance we at surface tension love nothing better to chill in the garden listening to some tracks on our ipod and playing the latest game we’ve downloaded for the ipad. However I’m sure you’ll agree, there is nothing worse than getting comfortable and your gadgets run out of charge! Well worry no more as MIT architecture students have created this ingenious creation called the Soft Rocker, a solar powered outdoor lounger where you can both relax and charge your electronics.

We would like to own a couple of these stylish looking garden accessories so we could rock away a few hours when our batteries need recharging. If you want to see one for yourself, make a trip out to MIT’s Killian Court in Cambridge. There are currently a number of loungers installed there!

A game of billards before dinner anyone?

Unless you’ve got a mansion you’re probably not gonna be able to fit in both a dining room table and a billiard table.  That is unless of course you throw down what is probably some serious cash for one of Koralturk’s tables.

Unlike standard billiards tables these convert to an everyday table and boast opulent finishes that seamlessly blend into any dining or living room. What a perfect way to compliment your surface tension coffee table.

We like the more subtle pure white version pictured below:

But for those of you that prefer a bit of bling they also make a Luxury Gold version which has been covered in real gold leaf. We understand that other finishes are also available and prices start from £3495.

Tetris shelving stop-motion

I’m a sucker for Tetris and an even bigger sucker for stop-motion. So when I saw a Tetris stop-motion video floating around, I simply couldn’t cope any more and my head exploded.

It’s pretty basic, but also pretty cool. We blogged early on about some build-your-own Tetris shelving, based on the amazing Brave Space Design for those not comfortable with the high block cost.

Road sign furniture

Tim over at JC&TIM has been creative with some used road signs. These would look great in the right pad, though I’m not sure what that would be!
