Dragon’s Lair turns 25

dragons_lair_1.jpgThis week marks creation of Dragon’s Lair 25 years ago. The machine that not only made you and all your mates go “WOW”… but your Grandmother too. I remember being a kid at that age where a pound was a lot to put into a machine that looked so difficult, it could have been over in 10 seconds flat. So I would have opted for 10 credits on Pac-man.

Needless to say, I was happy to stand and watch the Cartoon cabinet in it’s attract mode waiting for someone else to insert their hard-earned cash.

Here’s the magical source…

Pacman ghost lamps

I’m all for filling my home with retro-gaming items… and it’s a bonus if they actually do something. These Pacman ghost lamps would certainly be welcome. You should remember not to put Blinky by the window…

They are currently only in the concept stage at present.

Giant NES controller coffee table

This is a great piece of functional furniture. A scaled-up replica of a NES controller.

The best thing about it? It actually works. It looks a little awkward… but then again, maybe it’s just his bird making it look difficult!

Asteroids lamp

If you’re into your retro gaming, but don’t want all the cutesy characters or are fed up of blocks, maybe this is for you.

Apparently, it’s… “An angular plastic encased light, the Asteroid is a unique floor, or table light, designed with 24 facets — each with its own unique geometry. The lamp can be placed on several of the facets, to display as an individual, unique piece, as you like.”

If left on the floor, I imagine some would want to give it a boot. Some? …well, I would. If I’m to go the Asteroids route, I’d rather have the table. But then again, I already have a table!

Asteroids lamps are $176 from Design Public.

IGN launches new Retro channel

ign_retro_channel.jpg

Take a look at IGN’s new channel. It has old and new retro… if you know what I mean. From Pong to Playstation. I’m not sure where they got those Atari joysticks from though!

“…dedicated to the classics, and not-so-classis classics”

50 greatest arcade cabinets in video game history…

…according to i-Mockery.com.
Bear in mind that this is cabinet design and not about the games themselves. Quoting i-Mockery, because I couldn’t put it better myself… “Chances are you’ll see some games on here that you’ve never even heard of, and that’s likely because some of them sucked more than E.T. on the 2600″.

pac-man rug

Well, I would say it was more pac-man style. Anyway, a cool thing to have on the lounge floor, maybe with the surface tension table sitting nicely on top. But it also costs a cool £1095 for those into rug-munchers…
